This whole Palin nomination thing triggered a writing fit to the Op-ed pages of the Philadelphia Inquirer. The day after I listened to her speech in horror (and the pundits praise of this kook), I really had to take flaming pen in hand. The only thing that made me feel better was Gloria Steinem's rebuttal that Gwen sent today (Thank you Gwen)... see Steinem's letter below... but mine is attached. So, the attachment is something different--check it out, but I wanted to copy the text of what Gwen sent me, too. Write y'all... make your voices heard, this is sooo bogus I cannot even believe it's happening -- worse yet, it is DANGEROUS.

Last night I watched, appalled, as Governor Palin completely distorted the facts, used smokescreens to keep the media from legitimately inquiring about her checkered political past, and then launched into one of the most vicious and unnecessary attacks by a person at her “supposed level” as a Vice Presidential candidate that I've seen in a long time. I sat mouth agape in outrage wondering if anyone else was witnessing the RNC circus in the same way.
As a woman, I am offended... as someone who has worked in grassroots organizations I am offended, and as an American I am offended. How can John McCain and the Republican Party bring out a candidate who is so small-minded that she would use her power of office to make her ex-brother-in-law lose his job? Is that someone you want to take the 3AM call about a potential war, is that the person you really want to be a heartbeat away from leading the nation--a person so vindictive and pedestrian in thinking that she’d also call for the resignation of a librarian for not supporting her desire to ban books? John McCain picked Palin, does that seem like sound judgment to you? I have hard questions for the old guard of the Republican Party, but even harder questions for women voters. Do we really want to roll the clock back to rebuff science and start teaching kids one religion's concept of the origins of mankind while we trash the periodic table, as well as trash the evidence of evolution because it suits a select, hard core, right wing group?
Or maybe we'd be more comfortable just claiming that any war we've decided to engage in was "God's will and task," and then turn a blind eye to the fact that within that very same Bible Palin beats at the prime time podium it says to love one's neighbors. So now we’ve devolved into fundamentalist politics at the highest office, the very same echo of madness we so abhor in terrorists?
From ignoring global warming as a manmade reality that can be addressed, to trying to BAN BOOKS (people are you listening?), to supporting incredibly stupid and expensive legislation--like the now infamous "bridge to nowhere," this woman is a disaster. I have to go back to her attempt at banning books, though, in this rant. I'm an author and I am shaking my head. Do people really want to put someone in the White House, give her control over the education of the largest most formidable country in the free world, when this person wants to ban books, and was so vicious that she even tried to fire a poor librarian? That theme of Palin throwing her weight around is becoming a refrain. Things that make you go, hmmm... Given that we’re all under the Bush Administration’s Patriot Act, which has taken away too many civil liberties to count here, would you want a potential Commander In Chief who is given to “snits” when you disagree with her, and like an old Mafioso, would possibly take your job if you crossed her?
Then, when Palin was challenged by the legitimate media, right off the bat she played the "woman card?" If Obama had played the "race card," the country would have been all over him. Hilary didn’t go there—maybe that was because she had a platform, had some REAL experience, and had enough substance that she didn’t have to. Hmmm. So, I guess now, if during the debates, if Senator Biden goes after Palin, as is typical debate strategy, he'd then be labeled a chauvinist pig?
Ladies, as a fellow feminist and someone who highly respected Hilary Clinton's journey, DO NOT FALL FOR IT. We as a nation have been had. This woman, Palin, is out of step with reality, has a serious vindictive streak, and is being used as McCain's shield. Right now, the Republican platform is weak. It is as old, ailing, and doddering as its Presidential nominee. They don’t respect true women of power and authority. What tells me that is the number of excellent Republican female candidates they by-passed. This isn’t a historic moment; this is a media ploy, a game. Don’t be bamboozled. As a last minute desperation attempt, they pulled a right wing extremist, married to big oil, soccer mom out of the farthest hinterlands they could find and threw her to the public, knowing that there were disgruntled Clinton supporters. But Palin is no Hilary Clinton, and we voters with a little common sense know that. We also know that, if McCain is going to continue to support the Oil Industry lobby and drill in Alaska, it helps to have Alaskan politicos on your ticket waving the flag. You’d want those folks to get the benefits of your office while you destroy pristine natural resources, I suppose.
And, since the men opposing this atrocity can't go after Palin without some whining backlash about fairness coming from the GOP, let me chime in with millions of other women who were not fooled last night by saying, "Are you insane?" Or, how about this, "We ain't buying it, lady!" There, I’ve said it, you can count my voice in, because I will be loud and vocal, and since I’m a female I can’t be anti-feminist, can I?
What outrages me so about Governor Palin even being allowed to grace the podium has nothing to do with her chaotic personal life. On that I agree with Senator Obama, who elected, as always (and has throughout the campaign) to take the high road. What disturbs me to my core is that, in this twenty-first century, I want my daughter to have a choice, ESPECIALLY if she is God forbid raped or God forbid, ever fell victim to incest. I want my daughter to get a REAL education, which means reading opposing points of view, understanding diversity, and yes, being fully versed on the way her body works. I want that smug, self-proclaimed Washington outsider, Palin, to take note of the fact that, I'd rather, at this juncture, take my chances with some folks who know their way around the Capital than with someone who is plugged into BIG OIL -- literally married to it like a lobbyist. And, for the record, getting elected as a Senator of Illinois, a huge, densely populated state, is quite different than being Governor of a place that has more wildlife and Caribou than people, let’s be real. Wishing you were something doesn’t make you that, hon. Let’s give credit to the Obama/Biden ticket where it is due. Only a couple of months ago, you (Palin) were quoted in the media as saying you didn’t know much about Vice Presidential responsibilities and didn’t know what a VP did. The sound-bite was stunningly that of an airhead, but that’s just my opinion.
Bottom line is, I want my kid to be able to look up to the Oval office and see people there who have integrity, not a bunch of liars and scam artists who threw the Constitution under a bus for the sake of gaining political office.
Lastly, Governor Palin, I wouldn't tout your "executive decisions" too loudly as a campaign platform, given they were foolish and mean-spirited decisions. The record doesn't help you, sis.

I have a serious issue. My friends think my soul mate is gay. I think they’re crazy and jealous because I got him and they don’t. He’s strong and fine and there’s nothing soft about him. What am I to believe? Just because he dances in a bi-strip club doesn’t mean he gets down like that. He makes damn good money and that’s why he does it. When I asked him who this guy was that called my cell talking about catching his ex-boyfriend with mine after work, my honey denied it. He said someone was trying to come between us. Sometimes I feel like I’m all by myself because my girls have turned on me. I don’t want to be stupid but I don’t want to give up on a good thing either.
I got troubles in my head… and maybe a stranger in my bed.

The troubles in your head makes mine hurt and I can’t even lie about it. You got g-string blues and I’m sorry for you. Look here, and this is just me talking but I think your girls might be on to something. Whoever that dude was that called your cell, had to have gotten the number from your man’s phone or from his ex’s. Not that it means anything but it could mean everything. Any time a spurned lover contacts you to drop dime, it’s worth considering their two cents. Most people don’t go out of their way getting into your business unless it has a great deal to do with their own. Maybe he just wants his man back and can’t do it without bringing drama to your door. Maybe it’s a simple misunderstanding. Maybe the caller is wrong about catching your soul mate slobbing down his… or worse. Maybe you are stupid. After all, stupid is as stupid does. But I digress.
No man, no straight man, would be caught dead or damn near naked in a bi or gay strip club; neither as an entertainer nor an innocent bi-stander. Pun intended. I mean come on now, a dude who gets all oiled up to swing from a pole so that other dudes can howl, huff, and stuff money in his tiny thong. Dang it! I just got a mental picture and now I’m nauseas. (Note to self, never-ever-ever go there again)
Suggestion: If you still have the secret caller’s number in your phone (and I bet you do), set a meet and greet. I am certain you will get the dirty details in Technicolor. It might be more than you ever wanted to know about a certain soul mate on the down low.

Here's the good news: Women have become so politically powerful that even the anti-feminist right wing -- the folks with a headlock on the Republican Party -- are trying to appease the gender gap with a first-ever female vice president. We owe this to women -- and to many men too -- who have picketed, gone on hunger strikes or confronted violence at the polls so women can vote. We owe it to Shirley Chisholm, who first took the "white-male-only" sign off the White House, and to Hillary Rodham Clinton, who hung in there through ridicule and misogyny to win 18 million votes.
But here is even better news: It won't work. This isn't the first time a boss has picked an unqualified woman just because she agrees with him and opposes everything most other women want and need. Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It's about making life more fair for women everywhere. It's not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It's about baking a new pie.
Selecting Sarah Palin, who was touted all summer by Rush Limbaugh, is no way to attract most women, including die-hard Clinton supporters. Palin shares nothing but a chromosome with Clinton. Her down-home, divisive and deceptive speech did nothing to cosmeticize a Republican convention that has more than twice as many male delegates as female, a presidential candidate who is owned and operated by the right wing and a platform that opposes pretty much everything Clinton's candidacy stood for -- and that Barack Obama's still does. To vote in protest for McCain/Palin would be like saying, "Somebody stole my shoes, so I'll amputate my legs."
This is not to beat up on Palin. I defend her right to be wrong, even on issues that matter most to me. I regret that people say she can't do the job because she has children in need of care, especially if they wouldn't say the same about a father. I get no pleasure from imagining her in the spotlight on national and foreign policy issues about which she has zero background, with one month to learn to compete with Sen. Joe Biden's 37 years' experience.
Palin has been honest about what she doesn't know. When asked last month about the vice presidency, she said, "I still can't answer that question until someone answers for me: What is it exactly that the VP does every day?" When asked about Iraq, she said, "I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq."
She was elected governor largely because the incumbent was unpopular, and she's won over Alaskans mostly by using unprecedented oil wealth to give a $1,200 rebate to every resident. Now she is being praised by McCain's campaign as a tax cutter, despite the fact that Alaska has no state income or sales tax. Perhaps McCain has opposed affirmative action for so long that he doesn't know it's about inviting more people to meet standards, not lowering them. Or perhaps McCain is following the Bush administration habit, as in the Justice Department, of putting a job candidate's views on "God, guns and gays" ahead of competence. The difference is that McCain is filling a job one 72-year-old heartbeat away from the presidency.
So let's be clear: The culprit is John McCain. He may have chosen Palin out of change-envy, or a belief that women can't tell the difference between form and content, but the main motive was to please right-wing ideologues; the same ones who nixed anyone who is now or ever has been a supporter of reproductive freedom. If that were not the case, McCain could have chosen a woman who knows what a vice president does and who has thought about Iraq; someone like Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison or Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine. McCain could have taken a baby step away from right-wing patriarchs who determine his actions, right down to opposing the Violence Against Women Act.
Palin's value to those patriarchs is clear: She opposes just about every issue that women support by a majority or plurality. She believes that creationism should be taught in public schools but disbelieves global warming; she opposes gun control but supports government control of women's wombs; she opposes stem cell research but approves "abstinence-only" programs, which increase unwanted births, sexually transmitted diseases and abortions; she tried to use taxpayers' millions for a state program to shoot wolves from the air but didn't spend enough money to fix a state school system with the lowest high-school graduation rate in the nation; she runs with a candidate who opposes the Fair Pay Act but supports $500 million in subsidies for a natural gas pipeline across Alaska; she supports drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, though even McCain has opted for the lesser evil of offshore drilling. She is Phyllis Schlafly, only younger.
I don't doubt her sincerity. As a lifetime member of the National Rifle Assn., she doesn't just support killing animals from helicopters, she does it herself. She doesn't just talk about increasing the use of fossil fuels but puts a coal-burning power plant in her own small town. She doesn't just echo McCain's pledge to criminalize abortion by overturning Roe vs. Wade, she says that if one of her daughters were impregnated by rape or incest, she should bear the child. She not only opposes reproductive freedom as a human right but implies that it dictates abortion, without saying that it also protects the right to have a child.
So far, the major new McCain supporter that Palin has attracted is James Dobson of Focus on the Family. Of course, for Dobson, "women are merely waiting for their husbands to assume leadership," so he may be voting for Palin's husband.
Being a hope-a-holic, however, I can see two long-term bipartisan gains from this contest.
Republicans may learn they can't appeal to right-wing patriarchs and most women at the same time. A loss in November could cause the centrist majority of Republicans to take back their party, which was the first to support the Equal Rights Amendment and should be the last to want to invite government into the wombs of women.
And American women, who suffer more because of having two full-time jobs than from any other single injustice, finally have support on a national stage from male leaders who know that women can't be equal outside the home until men are equal in it. Barack Obama and Joe Biden are campaigning on their belief that men should be, can be and want to be at home for their children.
This could be huge.

Busy, Busy...
Hey Family,
So many things are going on in the world, Gustav pummeling the Gulf Coast (but at least this time it appears that the Government is on their job). My thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected. Then, this woman, Sarah Palin for V.P. announces that her 17 year old daughter is pregnant.(oh dayum) Of course McCain said he knew this.... bullsh&#@! He is lying through his old-ass teeth. He's as stunned as anyone. On a festive note, the biggest parade in New York City took place today...the annual West Indian Day Parade--my kinsmen/women were out there!!! Holla. On another festive note, on Saturday, August 30, the divine sisters of Sugar and Spice Book Club based in Queens New York, hosted me as their guest. There was a Hawaiian theme so the ladies had on grass skirts, did the limbo, doled out pina coladas and pineapple chicken. I had a ball. And me being inquisitive (another word for nosey)joined "Twitter" ask me why. Why Donna why? (she shrugs). Also, finally after weeks of being off the wagon I went back to the gym with my man. Got a good workout (not that kind haha). And I feel pretty good. I'm also supposed to be fasting this month. Today was the first day. Did good until about 5 when I petered out. And in between mother nature's wrath, an asshole running for the GOP nod and his unqualified sidekick, the West Indies coming to Brooklyn, and my return to the gym, I was able to do my edits for Temptation and Lies (Book 3 of the Ladies Cartel series) and begin a proposal for a reality television book (both of which are due tomorrow 9/2) wish me luck. LUCK!
Ooooh in other news... I will be doing my first virtual book tour. Ella has me just about everywhere in the cyber universe! I'm gonna get sick of seeing my ownself! LOL. But if I come your way, I do hope that you will leave me a comment. My tour begins Sept. 5 and will end Sept 30.

He's as stunned as anyone. On a festive note, the biggest parade in New York City took place today...the annual West Indian Day Parade--my kinsmen/women were out there!!! Holla. On another festive note, on Saturday, August 30, the divine sisters of Sugar and Spice Book Club based in Queens New York, hosted me as their guest. There was a Hawaiian theme so the ladies had on grass skirts, did the limbo, doled out pina coladas and pineapple chicken. I had a ball. And me being inquisitive (another word for nosey)joined "Twitter" ask me why. Why Donna why? (she shrugs). Also, finally after weeks of being off the wagon I went back to the gym with my man. Got a good workout (not that kind haha). And I feel pretty good. I'm also supposed to be fasting this month. Today was the first day. Did good until about 5 when I petered out. And in between mother nature's wrath, an asshole running for the GOP nod and his unqualified sidekick, the West Indies coming to Brooklyn, and my return to the gym, I was able to do my edits for Temptation and Lies (Book 3 of the Ladies Cartel series) and begin a proposal for a reality television book (both of which are due tomorrow 9/2) wish me luck. LUCK!
Ooooh in other news... I will be doing my first virtual book tour. Ella has me just about everywhere in the cyber universe! I'm gonna get sick of seeing my ownself! LOL. But if I come your way, I do hope that you will leave me a comment. My tour begins Sept. 5 and will end Sept 30.

BARACK OBAMA: AN AMERICAN PRESIDENT by William Fredrick Cooper
“With profound gratitude, and great humility, I accept your nomination for Presidency of the United States…”
Those words, spoken in a cutting, uncomplicated tone with power, precision, passion and promise, came from a man of my complexion with direction. Because so many dangled from nooses, endured hoses full-blast, were firebombed and horse whipped, or fell to sniper’s bullets, he stood at that podium last night, a mile higher than us all.
Conducting a symphony of hope, our next President spoke of individual and mutual responsibility, signing the words with conviction, sealing the envelope with hope for change, and delivering the fantastically flawless address to the doorstep of a Republican Candidate whose stale political tactics echo the sentiments of a President that has brought us to the brink of fiscal ruin; a man that agrees with a president who aligns himself with the financial contentment of Smith Barney over the struggles of Barney Smith. A Republican Candidate that agrees with a President loathed the world over for worn philosophies, questionable shot-calling and bullying tactics that may have fueled the loss of three thousand lives seven years ago on a Tuesday morning in September.
A Republican Candidate in accordance with a Commander-in-Chief growing more discredited by the day. McCain agrees with Bush 90% of the time. What does that say about judgment, wisdom and experience?
Surprisingly, there were no tears last night; in the alternative, only the slightest of smiles escaped me. While he was of my skin pigmentation, I was color blind for forty-plus minutes as our next President launched a renewal of American progression with the restoration of common purpose. Liberally emphasizing the need for compromise in gun laws, same sex relationships and the right of choice, I saw an objective balance between marching into the future with new ideas and a carefully structured maintenance of traditional values. Embodying the spirit of service of Ted Kennedy, the power of example spoken by William Jefferson Clinton, and the dogged determination of Hillary Rodham, the concrete agenda of aid to middle class America seemed reasonable.
But I ask one thing from the Nation in which he could not: Patience. Cleaning up a mess takes time and effort by all, not a savior with blueprint alone. He simply can’t do this by himself, and we can’t expect him to. Fundamentally speaking, we are our brothers’ keeper. So just as our next President will try to give tax breaks to companies creating jobs in Americas that won’t be outsourced, better healthcare, cut taxes for 95% of all working families, invest in education, and setting a clear goal on eliminating oil dependency from abroad, we must help him by becoming better people to our families and communities. Teamwork, people. Teamwork.
Periodicals call him a talented orator with vaporous credentials, inexperienced in the ways of the home of the brave. He must strengthen the U.S. Dollar, some say; be more specific in problematic areas, others argue. But my gut tells me on that morning, he’ll find a way to get it done. Innately level-headed, our next President is willing to fight, but only in a way that uplifts, not breaks down.
In my humble opinion, the only question standing in the way of change is fundamental one, but one that’s embedded deep within the fabric of which this country broke ground:
“Is America ready to bid adieu to its subconsciously bias yesterday and entrust the power of the highest office in the world to a person of color?”
Last night, our next President looked more like an American to me than ever.
Something new is stirring, and its next destination is the Oval Office.

He Has A Dream Fulfilled
Last night in a football field in Denver, Colorado, the first African American man accepted the nomination from the democratic party for president of the United States. Ten years from now, fifty years from now what happened last night would be no big deal. It would be business as usual.
But yesterday was not business as usual. It was history unfolding right before our eyes. It will be written in newspapers, blogs, magazines and textbooks. It will be discussed over family dinners, at watercoolers and in classrooms. It will become part of the annuals of American history. A history where less than 200 years ago, this county enslaved black folk, treated us with less dignity than property. They striped us of our names, our families, our language, our heritage. But still we rise.
We endured, survived and surmounted every obstacle that has been put in our path. And yesterday, on the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I HAVE A DREAM," speech, Barack Obama became the embodiment of that dream.
It was his image, his conviction, his oratory, his essence that made us all believe, black, white, red and brown that there is a better tomorrow and we ALL are going to the mountaintop, together.
Our parents and grandparents never thought they'd live to see this day. The sense of pride filled us all.
There are no more excuses ya'll. It can no longer be the "white man's" fault. We are our responsibility and Barack Obama has proven without a doubt that YOU can be whatever you want. But you cannot wait for what you want to be handed to you. Go out and get it!
Be responsible in your home, for your children and your community. Take care of yourself and each other. We can do it.

Here We Stand!
Every now and then, my friend and colleague William Cooper, composes a piece that I am compelled to share. This is one of them:
ONE MORE STEP by William Fredrick Cooper
I will weep at ten o’clock tonight. The tears will mix with the earth, causing flowers to grow. Gratefulness flowing my heart, to say that I give thanks to our forefathers is an understatement, for their labor was not in vain.
Imagine This: There’s a party going on in Heaven tonight. My brothers and sisters arriving Before The Mayflower are no longer in chains and shackles. Elegantly attired in tuxedos and evening gowns, with humility from yore they offer assistance, but are told by Our Heavenly Father to take a chill pill. They’re free, He reminds them. Those who were raped, whipped and tortured by slave masters throughout America’s Bad Time In History will be served by others as well, for they too, earned a lifetime of peace.
Frederick Douglass, Thurgood Marshall, W.E.B. Dubois and Paul Robeson a re exchanging hugs and hand pounds, and Malcolm X and Huey Newton are arguing over a game of chess. Though their anger has been tempered, their wars against injustice are now reserved for pawns, rooks, bishops and knights. Old habits dying hard, both want to win this match by any means necessary. Harriet Tubman, Shirley Chisolm and Rosa Parks are in their Sunday’s best. Jackie Robinson, Joe Louis and Jesse Owens are well-wishers at the gates to many late arrivals.
Ray Charles and Eubie Blake begin the evening’s entertainment by tickling the ivory in a way where Bojangles Robinson and Gregory Hines can get down. After the hoofers complete their scintillating duet that is sure to bring the house down, Lady Day, Dinah Washington and Phyllis Hyman will sing a version of “God Bless The Child” that will run over the dam of tear-ducts from all in attendance.
After Marvin Gaye made the congregation think with a spirited version of “What’s Going On” and we received ten minute apiece of comedy from Robin Harris, Red Foxx and Moms Mabley, many in the audience are in anticipation of Bernie Mac. The reason why is apparent to all that have convened for this very special pay-per-view telecast.
“You’ve heard him speak?” they all ask.
Bernie Mac, shaking his head in amazement, grins.
“He’s personable, friendly and funny, but he takes the business of changing things in America very seriously. Y’all just don’t understand. He ain’t scared of them mutha…
“Shut Yo Mouth,” Isaac Hayes interrupts.
“But I was talking about…”
“We Know,” The millions voices of African-American History shouted in unison.
Gerald Levert and Luther Vandross would lead a version of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” after the main event, but Mahalia Jackson would elicit emotions with a jaw-dropping rendition of “Amazing Grace”. Again moved by the magical melody of song, the crowd above roared for the keynote speaker to approach the podium.
He did, to a five minute standing ovation. Picture millions standing and applauding the reverend. Truly A sight to behold. Our Heavenly Father gave Martin Luther King specific instructions in four words: I HAVE A DREAM.
In the same impassionate voice, the heavens vibrated as he began by giving Abraham Lincoln, John and Robert Kennedy praise. Then, in a measured mixture of force and grace, from start to finish, the minister address the crowd with love. Speaking the same words of hope and unity that he uttered forty-five years ago in the shadows of Lincoln on that Washington lawn, he spoke of children of all races and colors holding hands as a current of history created by all on those in heaven will meet with a new tide of creation on earth, “In America” he emphasized.
“At Ten P.M. Eastern Standard time, we will be one more step away from being free at last,” Martin Luther King announced. “A Black Man will go toe-to-toe with a Republican Candidate for the right to become the 44th President of the United States of America.”
“One More Step! One more Step!” Millions chanted with all the emotion in their hearts, all the power in their voices, all the love in their souls. Then, they all tuned into the speech about to be delivered on earth.
William’s Thoughts: The Dream now one step away, the down payment of the White House will be made tonight in the most important speech given by a person of color in this country to date. The road to victory will not be easy, as Barack Obama will be subjected to a scrutiny unlike no other before him. Many have died for this dream deeply rooted in many fabrics, and we can’t forget that. Conducting creative movements with discipline and determination, we wear the scars of our forefathers as we are nine weeks away from the Promised Land.
Nine Weeks from freedom ringing for four years.
Nine Weeks from singing, if but for a moment, FREE AT LAST!

Gerald Levert and Luther Vandross would lead a version of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” after the main event, but Mahalia Jackson would elicit emotions with a jaw-dropping rendition of “Amazing Grace”. Again moved by the magical melody of song, the crowd above roared for the keynote speaker to approach the podium.
He did, to a five minute standing ovation. Picture millions standing and applauding the reverend. Truly A sight to behold. Our Heavenly Father gave Martin Luther King specific instructions in four words: I HAVE A DREAM.
In the same impassionate voice, the heavens vibrated as he began by giving Abraham Lincoln, John and Robert Kennedy praise. Then, in a measured mixture of force and grace, from start to finish, the minister address the crowd with love. Speaking the same words of hope and unity that he uttered forty-five years ago in the shadows of Lincoln on that Washington lawn, he spoke of children of all races and colors holding hands as a current of history created by all on those in heaven will meet with a new tide of creation on earth, “In America” he emphasized.
“At Ten P.M. Eastern Standard time, we will be one more step away from being free at last,” Martin Luther King announced. “A Black Man will go toe-to-toe with a Republican Candidate for the right to become the 44th President of the United States of America.”
“One More Step! One more Step!” Millions chanted with all the emotion in their hearts, all the power in their voices, all the love in their souls. Then, they all tuned into the speech about to be delivered on earth.
William’s Thoughts: The Dream now one step away, the down payment of the White House will be made tonight in the most important speech given by a person of color in this country to date. The road to victory will not be easy, as Barack Obama will be subjected to a scrutiny unlike no other before him. Many have died for this dream deeply rooted in many fabrics, and we can’t forget that. Conducting creative movements with discipline and determination, we wear the scars of our forefathers as we are nine weeks away from the Promised Land.
Nine Weeks from freedom ringing for four years.
Nine Weeks from singing, if but for a moment, FREE AT LAST!

Running On Fumes
Well folks it's been an action-packed week. As many of you know I had my very first virtual party which was a blast. We had a full house, some great conversation, and I think a good time was had by all. So if you missed it, the link to blogtalk radio is in the newsletter. So check it out.
In other news, I am currently working on my long-overdue sequel to my novel RHYTHMS. It is both challenging and exciting to revisit Rudell, Mississippi once again. Of course in the follow up there will be other issues pressing against my lead character Parris McKay and you will be introduce to two other complex and dynamic women whom I hope you will take into your hearts. It will be a while before "What Mother Never Told Me," hits the shelves but I promise to keep everyone updated and of course those in my fanclub will get first looks at the opening chapters.
I just turned in my third installment of The Ladies Cartel series, "Temptation and Lies," which will be out in February. Book 2 Seduction & Lies is scheduled for release in November of this year. So be on the look out.

Soul Expression Tour Update
Greetings Family!!
I'm finally back in my own house! I feel as if I've been on the road forever. But it's all good. My latest jaunt was the Soul Expressions Bus Tour sponsored by Levy Home Entertainment. This was my second year attending and I must say a good time was had by all. Some of the authors from last year were in attendance and we had some new faces too. I got to meet L. Devine, Wahida Clarke, Vickie Stringer and Marilynn Griffith (who is the funniest woman I have ever met). She kept us in stitches the whole weekend. Angela Benson joined us this year as well as my good friend Bernice McFadden aka Geneva Holliday. The old favorites returned as well: Rochelle Alers, Brenda Jackson and Beverly Jenkins.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Brenda, Beverly, Marilynn and Bernice for my blogtalk show (which airs on Sundays at 6 EST) but for some reason the recording did not upload last week! To say I am distraught is an understatement. I hope to be able to recover the interview soon.
The fans on the tour were great!
I'm looking forward to my next trip which will be the Baltimore Book Festival and then the Capital Book Fest. I hope to see your friendly faces out there!

HOTLanta--National Book Club Conference
Hey Fam!
Just landed on solid ground after my return flight from Atlanta for the Sixth Annual National Book Club Conference at the fabulous Marriott Marquis Hotel. I had a fabulous time and got to see sooooo many folks from all over the place! Want to give a shout out to Judi and Alicia and the sisters from Sugar and Spice Book Club and Pamela and Angela from Imani Book Club that hung out with me and Debra Owsley(Simply Said Reading Accessories).Hey Anya! Some of everybody was up in the place. Curtis Bunn did a fabulous job. We have pictures posted on my fanclub site. Take a look when you have a minute.
My girl Debra put together a Slideshow of the event.
I got to sit next to Terri McMillian all night during the banquet. And of course all of the author's shining moment was the walk down the red carpet. Yes, we felt like stars!! LOL.
Well, that's it from the road. I'll be heading out on Wednesday (my birthday) for the Soul Expressions Bus Tour which kicks off in Indianapolis and concludes in Chicago on Sunday. I do hope to see many of you out there as we hit the Wal-Mart stores.

Sistahs On the Reading Edge
Hey All,
Just had to bring everyone up to date on my recent visit to the left coast to visit my Sistahs On the Reading Edge in Anticoh, California for their annual Summer Sizzle. The event was fantastic and the hospitality even better.
I got to meet one of my own writing idols JD Mason! Who is simply wonderful. The actual event was a blast and the turnout was fantastic. I got to see so many folks that I know from flying back and forth out there as well as from conferences and booksigning events.
Dera Williams was there. She always comes out and supports. And I gotta give a shout out to my girl Deborah Burton from Turning Pages Bookclub for coming out. And to all the readers and bookclub members that came out to support me and JD, we love and thank you!!!
And big hugs to Lisa and Jackie co-founders of Sistahs on the Reading Edge for doing such a phenomenal job. I know I'll be seeing ya'll soon!

Chances Are--Revisited
On Friday August 1, 2008 CHANCES ARE will be "officially" available in bookstores.
This book is being re-issued by Harlequin from its original publication in 1998. However,this story will always remain dear to my heart as it sprung from my own personal experiences of running a housing facility for homeless teen mothers. As it was in 1998, a story of hope, of love and forgivness--and a sexy hero of course--those themes still resonant today.

Mow your Lawn or Go to Jail
While surfing the net for weird news, I stumbled across this one from weirdnews.com Enjoy.
In Ohio they take grass-cutting very seriously. So seriously infact that homeowners who don’t mow their lawns face a stiff fine, even jail time in some cases.
The city council has decided to get tougher by increasing the maximum fine for failing to cut the grass from $150 to $250. And they’ve also added up to 30 days behind bars if a violator is particularly bad. Mayor William Healy says it’s the type of action needed “in order to clean up our neighbourhoods and our city.”
In the US it seems you don’t even get enough jail time for serious offences like assualt and robbery so this was a bit suprising.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 18) - An internal affairs report says a Daytona Beach police officer demanded free coffee and tea from a Starbucks and threatened employees with slower emergency response times if they refused.
Lt. Major Garvin, a 15-year veteran, was fired July 8. According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Chief Mike Chitwood says Garvin recently failed a polygraph test that he insisted on taking.
The coffeehouse's employees claim that since June 2007, Garvin had visited the store as many as six times a night while on duty. Besides demanding free drinks, workers complained that Garvin also cut in front of paying customers.
A telephone listing for Garvin could not be found.

We're not sure what was on TV in 1966 in the former Yugoslavia, but it was the last thing seen by a woman whose remains have only recently been found.
Hedviga Golik, who was born in 1924, was discovered by police in the Croatian capital of Zagreb, long-dead and sitting in her armchair in front of her black-and-white television.
The deceased had been reported missing 42 years ago, and neighbors say they thought she had moved away to live with relatives. Oddly though, the police only recently broke in to try to determine who owned the apartment and they still have not figured out how the woman could have been reported missing so long ago without anyone checking the residence.
"When officers went there, they said it was like stepping into a place frozen in time," a police spokesman said. "The cup she had been drinking tea from was still on a table next to the chair she had been sitting in ... Nothing had been disturbed for decades, even though there were more than a few cobwebs in there."
A neighbor, fittingly, remembered Golik as "a quiet woman who kept herself to herself."

How Far Will They Go

On That Morning in November, we'll be alright. On That Morning, the skies will bleed a victorious blue. On That Morning, they'll be no clouds blocking what's rightfully ours. The sun will illuminate a heritage with warmth like no other time in history. Tears of joy will be shed from graves of slaves who died for our freedom, activists who endured hoses full blast, lynchings and assassinations, and every single discrimination because of skin pigmentation. Heck, even Clarance Thomas will be forgiven for his subjectivity, and Jesse Jackson will be pardoned for his momentary lapse, and realize that he too played a significant part in laying the foundation for a bridge once thought of as inconceivable. (It's all linked, Reverand. Don't fall for the Wright Gag.)
Years ago, a drop of water had more of a chance in hell than the tantalizing change before us. But Until Then...Buckle all seatbelts and fortify yourselves with armor for the Obamas. As the picture above indicates, we're in for a dogfight for those remaining acres. We're about to see the whole ball of wax in all its fury. Some of the nonsense will be blatant (Again, See Above), some of it forged from tech saavy, others testing our intelligence and common sense. See it for what it is, and pray that a country wanting change in all its sincerity will follow suit.
Check it.. This one's not about the interests of a twisted logic called white supremacy, which, by the way, is dressed in many disguises (CNN pundits, Political games, and periodical covers). This one's about change, one craved for and spoken in many ways throughout time. Singers came in song, poets and writers in their dreams, scuplters, painters and designers in their interpretation of beauty and awe, and scholars with blistering truths.
All were met with doors slammed in their faces.

It will carry us through this journey of grinding times, for on that November morning when we awaken to no clouds of cynicism in our sky, we'll know that everything's Kool and The Gang.

My colleague William Cooper posted the following on one of the lists that we are on and I felt it important to share with you. If you have not made your voice heard on the blatant slap in the face not only to Senator Obama and his wife but to Muslims, and black folk in general, then you should.
ON THAT MORNING, WE'LL BE ALRIGHT...

On That Morning in November, we'll be alright. On That Morning, the skies will bleed a victorious blue. On That Morning, they'll be no clouds blocking what's rightfully ours. The sun will illuminate a heritage with warmth like no other time in history. Tears of joy will be shed from graves of slaves who died for our freedom, activists who endured hoses full blast, lynchings and assassinations, and every single discrimination because of skin pigmentation. Heck, even Clarance Thomas will be forgiven for his subjectivity, and Jesse Jackson will be pardoned for his momentary lapse, and realize that he too played a significant part in laying the foundation for a bridge once thought of as inconceivable. (It's all linked, Reverand. Don't fall for the Wright Gag.)

Harlem Book Fair --updated information
On Saturday, July 20 at 1:15 p.m. at the Thurgood Marshall Academy on 135th in Harlem, I will be facilitating a panel discuss titled: Heroes and Heroines: The Impact of the Romance Genre on Commercial Black Fiction.
Panelists include: Gwynne Forster, Sandra Kitt, Leslie Esdaile (L.A. Banks) & Nathasha Brooks Harris.
Sandra Kitt a long-time veteran of the genre will give the audience a perspective of the history of the genre and the reasons for its longevity.
Gwynne Forster trained in sociology and demography will discuss the human condition and how even book characters are products of their environment.
Nathasha Brooks-Harris a romance author and editor will discuss the mechanics of a romance, what makes it successful and the difference between a romance and a relationship novel
Leslie Esdaile who has garnered enormous success in several genres began in romance and will discuss how that foundation and the depiction of hero and heroine translates into all of the genres in which she writes.
This discussion will provide insight into the genre's longevity and popularity and how its basic structure has provided an "acceptable" medium to mass produce stories about African Americans, build an audience and a marketplace thus providing the platform for the current surge in black fiction. Find out why the genre has remained unshakable, how it has retained and developed its fan base and how black romances, street fiction and commercial black fiction all tell of the black experience by reflecting the environment from which their heroes and protagonists emerge.

Kicking off the Work Week
Happy Monday!
Yeah, I know....but let's make the best of it anyway. I'm trying to keep my eyes open today. My granddaughter (who is 2) spent the night and she is on a schedule that does not translate well for those of us who have to get up in the morning. Needless to say, I'm beat. But, gotta keep it moving.
Wanted to say hello and welcome to all those who have joined the fanclub in the past couple of days. Be sure to also join one of the groups. I have them broken down East Coast, West Coast and MidWest. Now ya'll let me know if we need one for the South. We thought having areas groups would be great for those members to be able to connect with other readers in your area(hopefull). LOL.
Anyway, hang in there ya'll. Give it your best shot... and when all else fails, kick back with a a good book!!

Sharing some News
Hey All,
Well, summer is finally here!!! Being a summer baby (August) I love me some heat. So I couldn't be happier.
And it looks like I will be doing some major running around in the coming months. But its all good. I'll be at the National Book Club Conference, The Harlem Book Fair, The 49th National Delta's Convention, Out to California for a book club meeting and then I will be out in Chicago and Indianapolis for the 2nd Soul Expressions Bus Tour!! Yippee.

Books are Deceiving
This is a re-post of my article on Blogging in Black
Over the years I must admit that I got swept up in the misconception that the book was a reflection of the writer. How stupid and prejudicial of me, being a writer myself and having told countless people that the stories and the characters that I write about are not me or my life. Yet, I fell into the very mindset that I’d vehemently shouted against–when it came to me.
As with anything,it takes a major jolt, a reality check to jar prejudice from its roots. My jarring came during a bus trip that I took this past summer–the Soul Expression Bus Tour.
The tour was the first of its kind–a bus load of African American writers doing a sweep of Wal-Mart stores in three cities. The trip, the response, the sales, the fans were phenomenal. The trip was historical and has been regarded as the most successful tour that Levy books as done to date.
But during that tour, sharing that time and space with all level of writers and all genres I was afforded an up close and personal opportunity to see beyond the wall of prejudice I’d erected regarding certain writers and their work. And what I discovered changed my mind and attitude. These writers were nothing like the characters on the page or the stories they depicted.
These were smart, classy, fun-loving women who found a niche, mastered it and soared to success. They are brilliant business women who were so kind and giving to me in sharing ideas, offering suggestions and even their help. But most of all they offered friendship.
The bus tour was historic in many ways. For me, it was a turning point, an awakening. I’m happy that I went. I’m grateful that I had the chance to have my eyes and my heart opened. It’s easy to look at something or someone and make a blanket judgment based on personal prejudices or preconceived notions. After all it’s been done to us for centuries.
But now especially during Black History month when we look at where we were and how far we’ve come, it’s a good time to remind ourselves that we have enough against us, out there and we don’t need to be against each other.
I learned a lot during that tour and hopefully I have made some new friends that will last me a lifetime.
Over the years I must admit that I got swept up in the misconception that the book was a reflection of the writer. How stupid and prejudicial of me, being a writer myself and having told countless people that the stories and the characters that I write about are not me or my life. Yet, I fell into the very mindset that I’d vehemently shouted against–when it came to me.
As with anything,it takes a major jolt, a reality check to jar prejudice from its roots. My jarring came during a bus trip that I took this past summer–the Soul Expression Bus Tour.

The Turn Out Was Great
Thanks so all those who came out in the bitter cold to visit us at Hue Man Bookstore in Harlem. The discussion on relationships, the state of black literature and where we are going was inspiring and eye-opening. The brothers from The Flow are awesome!!
My First Book Signing for the Year
Hey Fam,
Well today I venture out on my first booksigning for the new year. Can I just say that even after 18 years in the biz, booksignings still freak me out!! Yes, it's true. I still get the butterflies and the racing heart and that old feeling.... who the heck is gonna come out and see me? sniff.
But I am going to put my best foot forward and head over to Hue Man Books in Harlem. I'm on a panel with Gloria Mallette and Kenda Bell.
So wish us well.

Getting it Together for 2008
Well, the new year is here. I try not to make resolutions that I know I will eventually break. However, I know I need to buckle down. I have several writing projects on my plate and even though the year has just started (two weeks ago), I'm already behind.
There once was a time when I could truly multitask without breaking a sweat! Ha, ha... now I sweat more than task... if ya know what I mean.
So learning to adjust to my new physical self has forced me to reevaluate my mental self and remember that I may get better with age, but there's just some things I can't do anymore...
Like say party Thurs, Fri, Sat and into Sunday morning... get up on Monday and go to work. If I did that now I'd get to work, but on a stretcher!
Or you could remember birthdays, phone numbers, addresses and names without having a million gadgets to store them on. Now... shoot, I can barely remember what I'm supposed to do next!
But life goes on. It's all about change anyway. I'm enjoying mine.. at least when I'm not too tired and get remember what the hell it is I'm supposed to be enjoying!

I was feeling creative this morning
I’m sitting in my library reading my copy of On The Line. I can’t stop reading it. In less than a day I’m almost at the end of the book. This book moves very quickly. As I read the stories I’m trying to figure out which author submitted what story. So far I believe I’ve identified Vincent’s story, Gwynne Forster’s story and TaRessa Stovall’s story. It’s kind of fun trying to determine who wrote what.
When Donna Hill informed me that I could write with complete freedom, I was like “Do you really want me to do that? And she said yes.
I had to change my submission because my original story went something like this.
Harry Potter’s Love for Medea
Ya’ll didn’t know? See what had happened was. Harry Potter wanted to get kinky with Madea. He was going all around Hollywood talking about how Madea helped him get over his break up with the Video Vixen. Apparently the Vixen had case a spell on Harry’s ass that made his glasses fog up. Madea showed up and slapped the fog out of Harry and now he believes he’s in love with Madea. But Martin Lawrence, who secretly have a thing for Madea as well, (something about a man dressing up as woman turns Martin on) ---got up set. So he called up Jerome, the Playa from the Himalayas and the crew from G-Unit Publishing to head up to Hogwarts School to set it off.
But then Harry came out acting like a wanna be gangster and started throwing spells and stuff around. But then the Playa from the Himalayas said ‘oh hell no’ and called up L.A. Banks and the entire Vampire Huntress crew. L.A. appeared out of nowhere sporting her black and purple full-length leather coat complete with a full armory of weapons cancelled on the inside.
“What’s up Jerome baby?” L.A. asked
“Oh, girl, damn you look good,” Jerome forgot all about the war going on around him and L.A. and to block a bolt of lighting that Harry shot his way.
“Oh, snap!” Jerome got his self in order. “L.A. baby. I need you to take care of this Harry Potter situation for me.”
“You got it Jerome. Just step aside,” L.A. said as she turned to her grew. “Let’s do this!” L.A. howled out. “I’ve been waiting to kick some Harry Potter ass for a long time.” Next thing that happened was Armageddon. Guns going off, spells being cast, explosions and all that stuff.
Then Francis Ray tried to step in to put a little in everyone’s heart but she accidentally turn one of Harry Potter’s flying brooms into Billy Dee Williams and said ‘oh boy, it’s Billy Dee. I’ve got to go ya’ll Billy and I are going on tour’----LOL I’m cracking myself up here.
Whew, sorry ya’ll I got a little carried away. But anyway, I’m so happy to be apart of this effort to bring so many diverse voices together between the pages of a grand novel. Thanks for all of your hard work Donna.

One More Day! Oh my...
Twas the day before Christmas.... and I STILL have not finished shopping!!! Grrrrr. Each year it seems to get harder and harder. The lines get longer and the money shorter.
But we gotta do what we gotta do. Next year, however, I am going to do what a dear friend of mine (whose name also happens to be Donna) suggested. "Give Love."
Hey how simple and wonderful is that. It fits everyone, doesn't cost a thing and it doesn't need to be gift wrapped and hauled in the trunk of the car to the festivities.
But until next Xmas rolls around.... I gotta get busy.
